Beating the Heat, Finding Grass and Drop Offs

September Bass fishing is all about beating the heat and working around the afternoon rain showers. The Bass get really fired up early in the mornings and sometimes in the afternoons right after our quick summer rain showers, which are very common this time of the year. We are catching large numbers of Bass in the 1-3 pound range, and are getting one good bite a day from a 5+ pound Bass.

How to Locate Summertime Bass

The lake we mainly fish is the Butler Chain of Lakes here in Orlando. The water is extremely clear for a Florida lake and is full of Pepper Grass, Hydrilla, Eel Grass and some Kissimmee Grass. Due to the large amount of Grass, Large schools of bait fish are commonly found throughout the Butler Chain of Lakes. Locating grass in the 10-16 ft range has been the magic ingredients to find lots of baitfish and large numbers of Bass. In the summertime grass will provide shade and produce lots of oxygen. These two things are key in helping the Bass to stay cool and healthy during the warmer months when oxygen levels are lower in the water this time of year. We have tons of areas on the Butler Chain of Lakes in Orlando with this exact combination of grass, water depth and bait fish, so finding schools of 10-100 Bass has not been an issue at all! These fish are hungry and ready to feed mainly from 7am-11am or from 3:30pm-7:30pm. We are using all artificial lures. They key here is light line, smaller weights and fishing slower down. Zoom Flukes, Get Hooked Magic Bait speed worms, topwater frogs and Raplas, and Swinbaits have all been very effective.
